This campaign is a two-pronged resolution solving for:
- Egnyte (Z Drive) instability
- Metallic causing longer than normal login times after startup
Egnyte
We had been utilizing Egnyte version 3.25 as a custom version given to FP by Egnyte engineering to solve for frequent drive disconnects. The fixes introduced in our custom version have been incorporated into their GA release of the product and we need to move everyone onto the GA release (3.28).
In addition the 3.28 release introduces a feature set that allows us to remove another piece of software (described in section below). Egnyte now has the ability to sync files from your desktop and documents folder into your Egnyte private directory and it will sync those across all devices if you have more than one. You'll notice icons on your files in these directories now as Egnyte syncs them (blue for actively syncing and green for synchronized).
This will allow for smoother transitions between computers when getting a new device and also prevent lost documents in the event of an endpoint failure.
Metallic
FP utilizes a product called Commvault Metallic to backup local files on computers from documents and the desktop daily to avoid data loss in the event the endpoint fails or accidental deletion.
Now that Egnyte will sync these directories to our file storage platform natively we no longer need this additional product.
This also has the added benefit of reducing the time it takes to log into the machine as we've recently seen Metallic responsible for slow login times after a restart.
